Unseasonably Warm!

91 degrees today – ouch! Thank heaven there’s a breeze (weren’t we still having 20 degree nights only three weeks ago?). Frizzle’s wife is dragging her wings in an attempt to cool down, and looks like a four-legged chicken. Actually the outer “limbs” are her frizzled primary feathers, normally tucked up nearer her body.

May is out stripping the sumac and other trees in the “peach grove” (the peach is one identifiable tree). The heat came before any of the trees had leafed out, so we don’t have too much shade yet.

I keep a close eye on the goatbabies in this heat. They have a pan of water but are still getting most of their hydration from their moms. Basil’s baby spent part of the afternoon curled up on the shade side of the cement blocks…

… before deciding they were more fun when used as a launching pad for attacks on other goatbabies, including the “panda baby” (Bagel’s girl).

The panda is a very fearless and friendly little doeling, especially as she is only three days old. I have to be careful walking around the pen because she will get underfoot hoping to be petted.

She especially loves “head noogies” – most goatbabies do! Some people say that you have to bottle raise a baby to make it friendly, but mine are friendly anyway. Panda is a good example in that she’s never had a bottle or food treat – she just likes affection.

Two of Peach’s boys had squeezed through to the second pen, where they met Frizzle Rooster.

In this warm weather no one stays up for long. Pretty soon the babies all find spots to curl up and take a brief siesta.
